As a recent college graduate and former college athlete, I understand the unique pressure that comes with balancing academics, performance, relationships, and identity in today’s fast-paced world. College can be an exciting season of growth, but it can also feel overwhelming — especially when you’re striving to excel in the classroom, compete at a high level, maintain friendships or dating relationships, and navigate constant comparison fueled by social media, technology, and AI. I specialize in working with high-achieving college students who struggle with anxiety, perfectionism, body image concerns, eating disorders, and the internal pressure to always perform. Whether you’re pushing for top grades, managing the physical and mental demands of athletics, or silently battling self-doubt despite external success, I provide a space where you can step out of performance mode and show up as your full, authentic self. You don’t have to sacrifice your mental health to succeed. I attempt to gather information in an easy manner, not "drilling" questions so people can feel comfortable sharing. I inquire whether previous counseling has been attempted to understand prior experiences with therapy and how it was helpful or not. I am a hopeful, positive person and try to help others find their strengths, positivity and hope within them as well. I will ask what goals a client has for themselves for therapy and life so we can focus on achieving those goals. As an experienced therapist, I recognize that people have had difficulty in their lives and do not diminish their story or not discuss the "hard parts" while we try to find ways to heal.
I help young adults who feel out of control of their lives. Stressed Out. Overwhelmed. Not quite sure how this whole adulting thing works. Trying to balance school, work, family, friends, and relationships. My clients struggle like you do. Despite being smart, driven, and funny, life is hard. When clients first come in, they may not feel enjoyment in the same activities they used to love. They may tend to mindlessly watch Youtube instead of completing their to-do list. They feel so stressed that they don’t finish tasks, and then beat themselves up for not completing it. The cycle continues as they feel worse and worse. My clients come into therapy looking for support, avoid doing things they used to love, have trouble connecting with family and friends, and find themselves second guessing their decisions. Choices may seem overwhelming, as if one wrong move sends them back to square one. They can’t sleep at night and have trouble completing assignments for college. In counseling, clients and I work together to see their choices in a wider lens and find ways that they are in control. We come up with plans to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Please contact me if you’re ready to take control of your life and be the person you want to be.

Do you feel on edge, stuck in your head, or like you can’t fully connect with the people you care about? Maybe your chest tightens in conflict, or you shut down when things get too overwhelming. These are signs your nervous system is in overdrive—and it’s not your fault. Through integrative somatic and creative therapies, I’ll help you tune into your body, calm your system, and feel safer in yourself and your relationships.
Are you feeling stuck? Are you having trouble shifting from who your parents see you as to who you really are? College age years can be very difficult. You’re trying to figure out who you are, what makes you unique, and how to navigate the fears of being an adult. I can help.
Christine(Chris) Hjortnaes has worked with College students for several years. She understands the many pressures of being in school, trying to plan for the future, holding down a job, maintaining healthy successful relationships, and raising a family while working towards a degree.
My clients tend to feel like they haven’t fully fit, often misunderstood in their environments. The stories we tell ourselves are very important, often they are stories that others have told us or placed on us. I believe that there is power in taking back our story and discovering what aspects you wish to keep or change. I approach therapy in an existential and narrative lens, with somatic and mindfulness influences to create a safe, inviting, and culturally sensitive therapeutic relationship. Some of my clients are discovering who they are, where my role is to give you a safe, inquisitive playground to explore parts of yourself. Other clients understand themselves, but may struggle living their true self in different contexts. Ultimately, I pay close attention to the why underlying your narrative to identify the meaning in what you bring up. Sometimes, these intersections are particular visible in our relationships. I offer couples and family counseling using a transgenerational lens & Gottman Institute techniques for pre-marital counseling. I offer free 20 minute consultation calls to discuss our goodness of fit.
Feeling overwhelmed by or drowning in the waves that life keeps hitting you with? Maybe you’ve been experiencing high tides for a long time or maybe you are experiencing them more recently due to a particular event in your life. Either way, it can feel exhausting AND you are not alone in this experience. Just as the tides of the ocean shift between high and low and never fully disappear, our life stressors will continue to ebb and flow. I will help you learn ways to navigate through the waves so that you aren’t consumed by them. I have 8 years of experience working with children, teens, and adults clinically in both crisis settings and school settings. I utilize a trauma-informed, integrative therapeutic approach to synthesize modalities to best meet the unique needs and goals of clients. Rather than maintain a rigid plan, I’ll intuitively pivot between Attachment-based therapy, Internal Family Systems, Somatic therapy, and other frameworks to best support the part of you that shows up in need during the session. Systems theory and social justice anchor my practice as I believe we are all deeply impacted by external systems, such as family, friends, careers, community, oppression, etc. I have experience working with clients who have been impacted by PTSD, incarceration, immigration, racial discrimination, homelessness, suicidal ideation, job loss, death loss of a family member, etc. No wave is too big or too small to be worked through in therapy. You’ve taken a huge step; You’ve shown up here for yourself to either start or continue your healing journey. If you feel we may align, please contact me for a free 15 minute consultation!
