Therapists for college students near 15213
My practice primarily serves LGBTQ+, queer, trans, and gender-expansive adults, alongside individuals navigating complex trauma, relational patterns, and perinatal mental health concerns. My clinical approach is supportive, affirming, trauma-informed, and grounded in relational and attachment-based frameworks. I integrate an awareness of how systems of power, identity, and lived experience shape mental health, and I strive to hold both individual healing and broader context in view. I have specialized focus in complex trauma, including childhood trauma, relational trauma, and attachment wounds. Many of my clients are exploring identity development, processing experiences of minority stress, or seeking a therapeutic space where they can fully express their gender and sexual identities without needing to justify or defend them. I also provide affirming care for individuals during pregnancy, postpartum transitions, fertility challenges, pregnancy loss, and other reproductive experiences. I am particularly mindful of the unique emotional and systemic considerations that may arise for LGBTQ+ individuals and families during these periods. While no therapeutic space can be perfectly free from the impact of broader social forces, I am deeply committed to creating a therapy environment that feels brave, collaborative, and respectful. I engage in ongoing consultation, supervision, and continuing education to support culturally responsive and identity-affirming care. My work is guided by trauma-informed principles, a commitment to equity and inclusion, and respect for client autonomy and self-determination. I view therapy as a collaborative process where clients are supported in deepening self-understanding, strengthening resilience, and moving toward meaningful change.
I'm located conveniently near a SEPTA regional rail station, and also provide encrypted videoconferencing support as needed if logistics prove challenging. In addition, I can connect students with other mentors/coaches/specialists through my position as Director of the Ruttenberg Autism Center. I have a very good relationship with a wide array of representatives from regional universities, and can provide therapy, assessment, advocacy, social skills, vocational training/guidance, educational/study strategies, and a number of other benefits. Flexible payment options and scheduling are available.
I mostly work with people in their 20s and 30s who experience depression and anxiety or need help navigating substance use, self-esteem, body image, identity development, sexuality, and interpersonal relationships. Life is full of highs and lows, and it is through these experiences and emotions that we grow. I would love the opportunity to help you work through the lows and discover a stronger and healed version of yourself. I have experience working in the collegiate counseling setting, helping students navigate anxiety, depression, adjustment, and substance use issues. I also have experience creating a safe space and working with LGBTQIA+ students with identity development, body image issues, and interpersonal relationships.
Understanding that our experiences are shaped by the environments we live in—our communities, culture, and relationships—I take a trauma-informed and relational approach to therapy. My work is grounded in the belief that healing begins when we feel seen, safe, and connected. I aim to create a space where you can explore your emotions, express yourself freely, and begin to reconnect with your body and sense of self. As an art therapist, I believe creativity can be a powerful pathway to understanding and transformation. In our sessions, we might use artmaking, mindfulness, or gentle somatic practices to help you express what words can’t always capture. These creative tools can support regulation, insight, and a deeper connection to your inner world. My practice integrates mindfulness, person-centered, and feminist frameworks, and I work collaboratively with each client to find what feels most supportive. I specialize in working with anxiety, life transitions, women’s issues, and LGBTQ+ concerns, and I strive to provide an affirming space where all identities and experiences are honored. I see therapy as a collaborative and compassionate process—one where we explore not just what feels painful, but also what brings meaning, resilience, and joy. My goal is to help you cultivate a sense of internal safety and confidence as you move toward a more grounded, authentic version of yourself. Outside of my work as a therapist, I find joy in thrifting and antiquing, or getting lost in a good fantasy novel alongside my two cats, Cricket and Jerry. If my approach resonates with you, I invite you to reach out for a free 15-minute consultation. I’d be honored to connect and support you on your healing journey.
Therapy is often stigmatized as a process exclusively for treating the mentally ill. However, this differs from what we do, and therapy is so much more. Therapy is healing. Healing is an art—an art of regenerating one’s innate package of power. Our purpose is to restore and enhance the self-healing and creative power already residing inside of you, and make you conscious of it, so that you may be your own cure. We will walk with you on your journey within, to discover your way to self-actualization, self-realization and becoming your best self. Let’s work together to create your masterpiece!
Welcome! I’m so glad you're here. We may not know each other yet, but I want you to know that I believe in your strength. Over the past five years, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside many people on their healing journeys—especially women just like you, who are navigating the ups and downs of relationships, healing from trauma, and learning how to trust themselves again. Through my work, I’ve learned one important thing: healing doesn’t just mean surviving—it means thriving. With the right support, tools, and a safe space to be vulnerable, you can break through the limits of your past and create a life that feels authentic, empowered, and full of possibility. I know college life can feel like a whirlwind—juggling friendships, relationships, academics, and personal growth all at once. It’s a lot. But you don’t have to do it alone. I’m here to support you as you navigate these challenges, whether that’s working through past trauma, navigating complicated relationships, or simply learning to love and trust yourself again. Your journey is uniquely yours, and it’s possible to turn your pain into power. I deeply believe that true transformation happens when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable. That’s when we open up the possibility for real change and growth. If you're ready to explore what that could look like for you, I’m here to guide you. Let’s walk this path together. If you're feeling stuck, unsure, or just need someone to talk to, reach out. Let's talk about how we can work together to help you feel stronger, more confident, and more connected to your true self.
Dr. Apraku is welcoming new patients for video appointments. As a Board-certified M.D. psychiatrist, she specializes in providing psychiatric diagnostic assessments and treatment recommendations for anxiety, depression, OCD and bipolar disorder. Dr. Apraku also gives guidance for mental health concerns related to life transitions, mood swings, anger and traumatic events. As a holistic provider, her focus is on medication management (including for patients wishing to decrease reliance on medication) in combination with extensive psycho-education and referral to a trusted therapist where appropriate. She has a particular interest in treating young adults with non-traditional backgrounds, including racial minorities. Through secure video, Dr. Apraku can treat anyone located in state. College can be exciting, and overwhelming. Between classes, relationships, work, and figuring out what’s next, it’s easy to feel stressed, anxious, or stuck. The Nurturing Circle is a mental health private practice dedicated to supporting college students and young adults as they navigate this season of life. We offer a safe, non-judgmental space to talk about anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, relationships, identity, self-esteem, and life transitions. Therapy at The Nurturing Circle is collaborative, down-to-earth, and tailored to your goals, whether you’re looking for coping skills, deeper self-understanding, or simply a place to feel heard. Our approach is affirming, student-centered, and focused on helping you build resilience, confidence, and balance; both in college and beyond. You don’t have to have everything figured out to start therapy. Showing up is enough.
I truly believe that everyone has the capacity to grow when they’re in a space that feels safe and accepting. At the heart of my work is building a genuine, trusting connection with you—because real healing begins when you feel truly seen, heard, understood, and accepted. Together, we’ll create a warm and welcoming space where vulnerability is embraced and self-exploration feels comfortable. Above all, I’m here to hold space for you with kindness and openness, honoring your unique needs, passions, experiences, wisdom, and hopes for the future. Specializations I’m especially passionate about supporting adults who grew up with caregivers who, for various reasons, may not have met their emotional needs.Together, we work to heal from those early experiences, find your true voice, clarify what matters most to you, and create a life that feels authentic, grounded, and free. I work with clients ages 15 and up to navigate challenges related to: Childhood relational trauma, emotionally immature parents, & unmet emotional needs Relationship patterns, boundaries, people-pleasing, & guilt Exploring identity, values, & personal growth Identity diffusion & enmeshment Shame, self-doubt, & indecisiveness Life transitions & emerging adulthood Grief & loss Anxiety, depression, & low self-worth Emotional regulation & distress tolerance Could We be a Good Fit? Clients who tend to do well with me often appreciate a little lightheartedness or humor during our sessions and enjoy putting what we talk about into practice between meetings—sometimes through small homework or weekly goals. Many have found it helpful to bring their creative interests into our work, which helps us build a space where you can feel safe, inspired, and free to be your authentic self. I’ve also noticed that adolescents, young adults, and college students often feel especially comfortable and connected in our time together. Therapeutic Approaches My approach to therapy is primarily rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Together, we’ll explore your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors with curiosity and work toward making the changes you’d like to see in yourself. For those who resonate with this approach, I incorporate Internal Family Systems (IFS) to support compassionate exploration of your inner parts. I also use a person-centered and trauma-informed lens, honoring the impact of your life experiences and creating a space where all parts of you are welcome. While CBT and IFS are my go-to methods, I like to keep things flexible, drawing from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI) to tailor our work to what feels right for you. My hope is that you find a space in therapy that feels human, welcoming, and uniquely yours. If you think we might be a good fit, I’d love to connect and explore how we can work together in a way that supports your growth. I currently offer teletherapy sessions at River Wards Wellness Collective. *Update 3.26.20: “Social distancing” need not interrupt or delay therapy. Many therapists (including myself) are providing telepsych (remote/distance) sessions via phone or video-call during this uncertain and surreal time. Many of us (including myself) have also lowered our student rates. You don’t need to hire me, but if you’re struggling, please connect with *somebody*. Now back to my regularly scheduled profile;) Hi! So, you’re checking out therapist profiles and considering therapy. Good move. Sometimes, talking with friends and family just isn’t enough. Maybe your mood, anxiety, relationships, use, or self- harm has gotten worse? I’m sorry you’re struggling - though you came to the right place. Really. Therapy can help you feel less overwhelmed and less stuck; break self-destructive relationship patterns and behaviors; take better care of yourself; get substance use under better control; and .... really, anything *you* want to address. For more than 20 years, I’ve worked with adolescents and young adults struggling with school, relationships, ADHD, grief, anxiety, depression, self-injury, substance use, and most anything else you can imagine. I am passionate about my work - most especially my work with your age group. My niece dubbed me a “teenaged grownup”. I didn’t argue:) Here are some “reviews” by real clients: *easy to talk to and approachable *Understands the student experience and WCU culture * she gets what it’s like to be my age in the 2000s * She’s pretty funny sometimes * she treats me like a real person *very accepting and non-judgmental; I can talk with her about super sensitive stuff. *She cares. I trust her. You can learn more about me and my practice on my website. If we decide to work together, know this: I am honest, sincere, and direct. I will never impose my agenda or beliefs on you. I want to help you become the best version of yourself. You needn’t see *me* But, if you’re struggling, please try at least a few sessions with *somebody* The best therapy takes place in a relationship in which you feel heard, respected, and safe. Please don’t settle for anything less. Best, Amy
